Abstract

1368040 Rolling mills MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO 27 April 1972 [29 April 1971] 19550/72 Heading B3M A guide assembly, for changing the direction of hot metal rods between a rolling mill and a coiler, includes a main pulley 1 (Fig. 1) and a number of small rollers 7 spaced around part of the periphery of the pulley, the rods being guided between grooved surfaces on the pulley and rollers. Two sets of grooves of different size (Fig. 2) may be provided in both the pulley and rollers, or the pulley may have a single groove and be axially movable to suitably align the groove with one of the grooves in the rollers. The pulley is driven by an electric motor and serves to drive the rollers which are spring- urged against its periphery. The rollers are carried in a frame 2 pivoted at 3 for movement away from the pulley, and are each carried in a housing 6. The housing is pivoted at 8 to the frame, and biased by an adjustable spring 9 towards the pulley. Guides 10 extend between the walls of the frame and are positioned between adjacent rollers. Alternatively, guide shoes (Fig. 7, not shown) may be carried by the housing 6. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5, the rollers are supported between the links 31 of a chain assembly, the lower end of the assembly being laterally adjustable, and the upper end being tensioned by a spring-loaded lever 40 to press the rollers against the pulley. The periphery of the pulley may be modified by having pivoted segments 53 attached to its rim, the segments being urged outwards by centrifugal force against limit stops. The segments may be formed from cemented carbide. Similarly, the rollers or their rims may be of cemented carbide. The spindles of the rollers may be used to supply mist lubrication and air cooling to the rollers. Where the pulley and roller have two sets of grooves in their periphery, a switch guide is used for directing the rod to one or other set of grooves.
