1367958 Aircraft and spacecraft structure COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 1 Nov 1971 [5 Nov 1970] 50724/71 Heading B7W [Also in Divisions E1 and F2] Lightweight beams or panels, e.g. for use in aircraft or space technology, are formed from a cellular structure, each cell of which comprises a stiff outer box, e.g. 10 surrounding but spaced from a stiff inner box, e.g. 11, with damping means therebetween, there being inwardly directed ribs, e.g. 12 on the outer box engaging in inwardly directed ribs, e.g. 13 on the inner box, the ribs being arranged in a herring-bone pattern. Both boxes may be straight, or the inner one curved and the outer one straight, as shown, or both may be curved, e.g. in a spherical form. Adjacent cells are welded or glued together, and prestressing wires 16 may run from cell to cell. A surface coating 18 of glass cloth may be provided. The damping means may be a poured or injected wires-elastic material such as epoxy resin or polyurethane or may comprise balls or granules of a ductile or plastics material, or comprise spring blades, or a combination of these. The boxes are moulded from aluminium alloy or fibre reinforced plastics, in two halves. The cell cavities may communicate via ports (19), Fig. 1 (not shown). High-inertia beams may be made from panels formed as above, interconnected by similarly-formed webs, arranged in cruciform fashion, or cross braces.
