Abstract

1367942 Dental tool drive flexible shafts O MUSS 9 Nov 1971 51925/71 Addition to 1295134 Heading F2U [Also in Division A5] A dental tool drive comprises a flexible shaft 2 connected to drive means at one end and at its other end, an adaptor for receiving interchangeable dental tools, the adaptor comprising a conecoupling 4, 5 having a driven part fixedly connected to the other end of the flexible shaft 2 and a driving part 6 which can engage a dental tool, the two parts of the coupling being separable and engageable in response to axial sliding of an outer sleeve 10 of the adaptor, there being arranged on the driving part 6 a brake 18, 19 actuable by axial sliding of the outer sleeve 11 simultaneously with decoupling 9 the conecoupling 4, 5. The outer sleeve 10 is provided with pins 12 and 13 which fit in slots of a guide sleeve 11 so that rotation of the outer sleeve 10 causes its axial movement. The brake comprises a male part 18, secured to the driving part 6, which engages a sleeve 19 attached to the outer sleeve 10 and axially displaceable against a spring 21. In order to prevent rotation of the driving part 6 after disengagement of the clutch a first axially slidable gear ring sleeve 21 is arranged on the driving part 6, the teeth 22 of which engage teeth 23 of a second gear ring sleeve 24 attached to the outer sleeve 10. A chuck 26, for a dental tool, at the free end of the driving part 6 comprises three clamping jaws (30) Fig. 4 (not shown) movable in the end of the driving part 6 by means of a clamping ring 27 having an inner collar (32) there being a thrust ball bearing (33, 34) between the front face of the jaws (30) and the inner surface of the collar (32) to reduce friction.
