Abstract

1367882 Shaft seals CHARLES WESTON & CO Ltd 21 Dec 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 45029/70 Heading F2B A lip type seal for use between members rotating at different speeds, e.g. a housing and a shaft 16, comprises a P.T.F.E. sealing washer 15 clamped in a casing 10 by a clamping ring 14 and having a sealing lip loaded by an axially movable ring 17, means being provided to prevent relative rotation between the ring 17 and the casing 10. The ring 17 is urged by spring 18 against the sealing lip and has a thread 20 on its inner periphery which co-operates in use with the shaft to exclude grit. To facilitate assembly of the seal on the shaft, the ring 17 can be retracted from the lip by screws 22 engaging threaded holes 21 in the ring, as in Fig. 2. An indentation 19 in the ring 14 engages a recess 20 in the ring 17. The washer 15 may be of fibreglass or metal filled P.T.F.E. and the ring 17 is preferably of the same material as the shaft 16 but may be of P.T.F.E. or other plastics. The invention may also be applied to an externally acting seal, Fig. 3 (not shown).
