Abstract

1367671 Magnetrons ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO Ltd 12 Jan 1972 [17 March 1971] 7144/71 Heading H1D A magnetron is tuned by means of a slug of dielectric or metal fitting closely in the bore of a conduit 30 located in a cavity of a magnetron and connected by conduits 28, 29 to chambers 21, 22 respectively comprising piezo-electric cylinders 23, 24 which are caused to expand or contract axially in phase opposition by potentials applied to their inner and outer surfaces, thereby causing an hydraulic fluid filling the chambers and conduits to move the slug 31 along conduit 30, the arrangement being such as to magnify the movement of the piezoelectric cylinders. A separate tuning device may be provided in each cavity of the magnetron. In Fig. 1 (not shown), a single chamber is used to move a tuning element mounted on a bellows. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the tuning element is acted on by two chambers acting in phase opposition and is again mounted on bellows.
