Abstract
1366923 Uranium carbide; uranium nitride NUKEM GmbH 10 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 52145/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] Nuclear fuel consisting of more than 80% by weight of UC or UN is prepared by heating a mixture of uranium oxide and carbon in vacuum, under a protective gas, or in nitrogen, the process being interrupted before reduction is complete so as to provide a mixture of uranium oxide, carbon, and UC or UN, which is ground, pressed into shape and sintered. Stearic acid may be added to the grinding fluid in order to coat and protect the powder.
