Abstract

136,617. Godsal, P. T. Dec. 16, 1918. Breech actions, sliding breech-block.-Relates to breech actions of the type described in Specifications 22003/02, 1540/14, and 18021/14, having a breech-block capable of rotation in a carrier slidable longitudinally, and consists (1) in mounting the striker and its spring in the rear of the carrier and an independent firing-pin in the block; (2) in mounting on the striker a cocking- piece having a bent directly beneath the carrier. (3) in mounting on the carrier a hood containing a safety-catch, and (4) in mounting in the carrier a spring plunder adapted to hold the breechblock against rotation except when it is in the locking position. In the form shown, the striker 3 and its spring 4 are housed in a boring in the carrier 2, the protruding end of the striker carrying a cocking-piece 5 with a bent 6 running in a groove below the carrier 2 and engaging the sear 7. A nose 12 on the striker, adapted to enter a recess in the breech-bolt when this is locked, serves to check the striker before it reaches the firing-pin 28 if the bolt is not properly locked. A hood 15 mounted on the carrier is held in position by the hand-lever 11, and encloses a safety-catch 18 rotatable by a thumb-piece 20 into any one of three positions in which it is held by a spring catch 27. In the central position of the thumb-piece, the stop 26 arrests the striker before it reaches the firing-pin 28; in the left-hand position, the safety obstructs all movement of the striker; and in the right-hand position, the cutaway portion 24 permits the striker to go forward to fire the gun. In addition, a small metal ring may be sprung on to the shaft of the striker in rear of the carrier when it is desired permanently to prevent the striker from reaching the firing- pin. A spring plunger 34, Fig. 3, in the carrier 2 is adapted to engage the breech-bolt and hold it against rotation until the bolt reaches the locking position, when the plunger strikes the righthand jaw of the breech and is disengaged from the bolt. A bolt stop 31 is mounted on the side of the body 1, and may be sprung aside to permit the passage of the bolt when assembling.
