Abstract
1364990 Excess current switches ELLENBERGER & POENSGEN GmbH 5 June 1972 [1 July 1971] 26170/72 Heading H1N In order to manually close an excess current switch (Fig. 2), so that contact arcing on closure is reduced, a stop 50 is engaged by the latch portion 26 just before the contacts make, such that further movement of the actuating lever 1 stresses the spring 31, the latched member 25 then being tripped by the portion 30 on the arm 5 of the lever 1 allowing the contacts to "make" rapidly. For automatic opening, the lever 41 trips the locking member 16, allowing the two portions 9, 13 of the toggle arrangement to collapse, and the contacts are separated under the action of spring 28, Fig. 3 (not shown). Thermal 39 and/or electromagnetic 37 tripping means may be used. In case of short circuit currents, the electromagnetic means also assists the contact separation, the projection 46 on the armature actuating the bell crank lever 49 which strikes the base of the contact arm 24. A further projection in the housing (not shown) may engage an additional arm on the locking member during manual opening of the switch to collapse the toggle. Alternatively manual opening may be achieved with the toggle locked, (Fig. 2). The spring 6 causes the collapsed toggle to be relocked after a trip type release, setting the actuating member from the open position to the switch tripped position.
