1364421 Making carbon filter elements SUTCLIFFE SPEAKMAN & CO Ltd 21 July 1971 [28 July 1970] 36540/70 Heading B1D [Also in Division Cl] Bodies of active carbon, usable in the treatment and purification of non-aqueous fluids, are formed by bonding together particulate active carbon to give a body of specific shape using a method in which water is mixed with a quantity of the particulate carbon and a quantity of a cellulose derivative to provide a green paste which after thorough mixing is shaped and dried to provide adhesion between the particles and the binder so that the desired shape is retained. Cellulose derivative is defined in the Specification as referring to a methyl cellulose ester or compound which can act on the surface of active carbon granules so as to bind them together. A preferred material is sodium carboxy methyl cellulose. The drying step is preferably such as to maintain the internal surface area of each particle and the interstices between the particles. The particles preferably have a size in the range 200 BSS to 3/8". Preferably water in an amount of 25 to 50% of the total weight of the wet mix may be added. The cellulose derivative may be used in an amount of 2 to 20% by weight of the particles.
