Abstract

1364357 Preparation of CH 3 OH in a tubular reactor METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 5 May 1972 [14 May 1971] 21186/72 Heading C2C Methanol is obtained by passing hydrogen and oxides of carbon at 230-280‹ C. under a pressure of 10-200 Kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> above atmospheric pressure over a particulate Cu-containing catalyst contained in a metallic tube or tubes, which is or are contacted on the outside by a cooling fluid (e.g. boiling H 2 O under pressure), the mass velocity m of the synthesis gas (e.g. fresh gas plus recycle gas) entering the catalyst tube or tubes, in Kg./square metre/second, the height L of the catalyst bed in metres and the inside diameter D of the tube(s) in millimetres being defined by the equations wherein p is the density of the gas in Kg./m.<SP>3</SP>, d is the catalyst particle diameter in mm. and the empirical factors have the values: The catalyst particles are preferably spherical or cylindrical with a diameter > 3 mm. (e.g. 5-12 mm.) and include annular particles with an outer diameter of 10-20 mm. and a wall thickness of 3-6 mm. and the particles preferably have a bulk density > 1Kg./litre (e.g. 1À5-2 Kg./l.). Examples 3 and 4 describe the production of methanol using reactors containing (a) 184 tubes (L = 6m., D = 34mm.) packed with catalyst particles of diameter 5 mm. and (b) 1 tube (L = 16m., D = 100 mm.) packed with catalyst particles of diameter 12 mm. respectively.
