1363192 Ball mills COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES and SOC GRENOBLOISE D'ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS HYDRAULIQUES 2 June 1972 [2 June 1971 24 May 1972] 25854/72 Heading B2A [Also in Division El] A ball mill comprises a chamber having jet orifices at one end surrounding an inlet for material to be ground, the jets agitating material and balls within the chamber and ground material passing out through orifices in the side of the chamber. In one application, the chamber 14 is arranged adjacent the head on an earth boring drill and breaks up the core 18 as the drill advances. High pressure fluid (gaseous or liquid) passes down the drill pipe 17 to jets 23, agitating balls 20. Ground material passes through orifices 25 to flow upwards through the borehole. Part of the fluid is fed through channels 27 to the diamond tool face 15 (not detailed). Pivoted elements 28 retain the balls in the absence of the core. In a variation of this application Fig. 4 (not shown) ground material leaves the chamber 14 to enter a channel (29) within the drill pipe communicating with the channels 27. In an application to a high pressure liquid circuit in which detrimental accretions and scale may be produced. This material enters a chamber 3, Fig. 3 which may be a collecting chamber, before passing into the grinding chamber 6 through an inlet surrounded by high pressure jets 8. The liquid and ground material leave the apparatus via orifices 11 and outlet 13.
