Abstract

1362894 Automatic control TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 6 July 1972 [5 Aug 1971] 31575/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division C5] In alkylation apparatus, where an olefin is reacted with an isoparaffin in the presence of an acid catalyst, to form an acid-hydrocarbon mixture that is then separated, a portion of the acid being recycled and the remainder being discharged and replaced by fresh acid, the strength of the acid is regulated according to the actual acid strength, and the olefin input composition and flow-rate. As shown, butylene or propylene is reacted with isobutance in mixer 4, using a sulphuric acid catalyst, the resultant mix being separated in settler 12 into hydrocarbons, discharged through line 14, and acid, recycled by pump 20, a portion of the acid being discharged via line 21, fresh acid entering through line 17. The acid discharge flow-rate, as detected by sensor 33, is maintained at a required value from set point means 28. This value is varied according to an average acid strength signal, calculated using analogue or digital techniques from the time of titration of an acid sample with caustic as determined by programmer 27, and an anticipated required value which is calculated from the olefin input flow-rate from sensor 40, and input composition from chromatograph 38. The discharge flow-rate is thus adjusted for each acid sample taken, using the programmer 27 to start and stop the acid analysis, and to recycle the apparatus. If for example the acid strength is too low, acid discharge is increased, with subsequent increase of inflow of fresh acid to maintain the liquid level in settler 12 at a pre-set value, and thus regulate the acid strength. Circuits 27, 28, 35 and 36 are described with reference to Figs. 2-6 (not shown).
