Abstract
1417613 Alkylation apparatus TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 March 1973 [26 May 1972] 14406/73 Heading B1X [Also in Division C5] Apparatus for controlling an alkylation unit to achieve an optimum operating condition, said alkylation unit including a contactor in which an olefin-isoparaffin mixture is contacted with acid at a temperature controlled by utility means in accordance with a control signal and which provides an acid-hydrocarbon mixture to a settler which separates the acid from a hydrocarbon product which includes alkylate, a portion of the separated acid being discharged and another portion of the separated acid being fed back to the contactor together with fresh acid which is added to the feedback acid to replace the discharged acid; said apparatus comprising temperature sensing means for sensing the contact temperature and providing a signal corresponding thereto; utility sensing means for sensing a utility consumption and providing a signal corresponding thereto; acid sensing means for sensing a condition related to the acid and providing a signal representative thereof; hydrocarbon product sensing means for sensing conditions of and/or related to the hydrocarbon product and providing signals representative thereof; olefin sensing means for sensing a condition of the olefin constituent of the isoparaffin mixture and providing a signal representative thereof; economic value signal means for providing signals corresponding to economic values WQ, WA and Wu related to the octane rating of the alkylate, to the acid consumption and to the utility consumption, respectively; acid control means for controlling the acid entering and/or leaving the alkylation unit in accordance with a control signal; utility control means for controlling the utility consumption in accordance with a control signal; and control signal means responsive to all said sensing means and said economic value signal means for providing control signals to the acid control means and to the utility control means so as to achieve an optimum operating condition for the alkylation unit. As exemplified, the product sensing means responds to flow rate; the olefin sensing means responds to the concentration of olefin in the olefin-isoparaffin mixture; the acid sensing means responds to the flow rate of discharge acid. The "utility" may be cooling water. The various signals may be fed into a computer which provides the control signals.
