Abstract
1362813 Evaporative heat exchanger BALTIMORE AIRCOIL CO Inc 28 June 1971 [19 May 1971] 54086/73 Divided out of 1362811 Heading F4K In a heat exchanger comprising an injector duct in which air is evaporatively cooled by contact with sprayed water, which subsequently collects in a sump 16 whilst the cooled air passes out of the duct, spray means 15 are located at the air inlet end of the duct to cause a concurrent flow of air through the duet, and an adjustable valve 31 (or 45, Fig. 2) is provided to control the flow of water to the spray means at least partly to regulate the flow of air through the duct. In the arrangement shown the need for regulation is detected by a sensor 36 in the outflow line 17 from the sump. The sensor acts to partially close dampers 19m in the duct outlet and at a predetermined closure (e.g. from 50 to 80%) a switch 29 is actuated to open the valve 31 located in by-pass 32 so allowing some of the water from pump 33 to be recirculated through the by-pass. Hence, the water supply to the sprays is reduced and as a consequence the injected air flow is also reduced. In a further arrangement (Fig. 2) there are no adjustable dampers at the duct outlet and regulation of the spray head water supply is by a valve (45) in the line 13, said valve being actuated directly by the sensor 36. 34 is a heat load which may comprise, e.g. a cooling tower or a surface condenser.
