RUDOLF SCHIEBER KG 24 Nov 1972 [13 March 1972] 54483/72 Heading D1C A flat knitting machine has drive means for the carriage disengageable by an electrical signal produced by a shock wave caused in the needle bed by a needle break which moves a member between normal and deflected position to close a contact and produce a signal. Switching devices 2 mounted on the needle beds of a parallel machine, when affected by shock waves, cause the drive to the carriage 13 to be disconnected except when the carriage passes beyond monitoring points 17 at the ends of the needle beds, so that devices 2 are not affected by the extra vibration at the ends of the traverse. Device 2 comprises a sphere 5 which on excess vibration rolls away from the needle bed and engages contact plate 6. To allow for stronger shock waves sphere 5 may rest on an adjustable slope so that the shock necessary to move it can be varied. The disengaging arrangement for the drive to the carriage is as described in Specification 1362488. A switching device Fig. 10 to respond to shock waves in opposite directions has a sphere 5 lying between two upwardly sloping tracks 20, 21 each having an associated contact 6. In a further arrangement a sphere carried on a flat spring may be made to bounce off the needle bed by a shock wave and engage an adjustable contact. In a further arrangement, a sphere rolls away from the needle bed to break a circuit momentarily.
