Abstract

1362638 Oxidative chlorination catalysts, Deacon catalysts MONSANTO CO 10 Nov 1972 [12 Nov 1971] 51976/72 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions Cl and C2] Catalyst compositions are prepared by dry mixing an anhydrous cupric halide with a specified activated alumina and heating the mixture at 300-600‹C. The specified activated alumina has a weight loss on ignition at 1000‹C of 3-8%, a sodium content less than 0.05 wt % as Na 2 O and a crystalline structure derived from a mixture of boehmite and γ-alumina, having an X-ray diffraction pattern displaying lines at 1.38-1.40Š; 2.33-2.38Š; 1.96-2.00Š; 6.1-6.2Š; 1.83-1.88Š and 3.1-3.2Š; the strongest line being at 1.38-1.40Š, and having an average crystallite size of 50-100<SP>+</SP>Š based on the width of the 3.1-3.2Š line and of 30-40Š based on the width of the 1.96-2.00Š line.
