Abstract
A halogenation catalyst comprises an aqueous solution of cupric halide, cuprous halide and as a solubilising agent a halide of Li, Mg, Ca, or a mixture thereof, the total copper concentration being between 6 and 90 mole per cent, and the ratio of Cu\sW\sW to Cu\sW being substantially 14:1 to 1:2. Examples describe the preparation of mixtures of chlorides and bromides. Halogenation may be effected in apparatus constructed from Ti or Ta alloys e.g. Ti - Pd.
