Abstract

1362059 Transferring liquid cargoes; counterbalancing FMC CORP 8 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 51759/71 Headings B8E and B8B A marine liquid transfer arm 20 comprises an upright support riser 22, an intermediate arm 24 extending from the riser and pivoted about a horizontal axis A, an inboard arm 26 pivoted on the arm 24 about a horizontal axis B, an outboard arm 30 pivoted on the arm 26 about a horizontal axis C and a support boom 34 joining the axes A and D and pivotable thereon. An assembly 68 at the outer end of arm 30 for connection to a marine tanker manifold has swivel joints 72, 78, 82 to facilitate universal movement between the arm 20 and the tanker (not shown), the arm assembly being able to slew about vertical axis E. Beams 88, 90 extend from the boom 34 and carry a pair of counterweights 84, 86 forming a primary counterbalancing assembly 38. A secondary counterbalancing assembly 40 comprises a pair of counterweights 92, 94 mounted on beams 96, 98 pivoted on the primary counterweight beams 88, 90 about a horizontal axis F. The assembly 40 is linked to the arm 26 by a strut 102 and a cross member 100 joining the struts 96, 98, the arrangement being such that the axes A, B, C, D form one parallelogram, while the axes F, A, B and the member 100 form a second parallelogram.
