Abstract

1361896 Pressure vessels KOEHRING CO 27 Nov 1972 54670/72 Heading B8D [Also in Division B5] A thermoplastic pressure vessel comprises an annular differential-pressure-formed side wall 10 and a differential-pressure-formed bottom 11 having a concavo-convex bottom wall 13 and a peripheral flange 14 which, over an area a, is telescopically received into the lower end of the side wall 10 with an interference fit and is friction welded thereto with the interposition of friction weld material 15. Shoulders 17 and 19 on the side wall and bottom respectively limit the extent to which the bottom can be inserted into the side wall. To facilitate friction welding the base of the side wall 10 has a series of outwardly projecting ribs 16 whilst the base of the flange 14 has a series of inwardly projecting ribs 21. In a modification, the side wall 10 comprises two annular parts (10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>11</SP>) which are telescopically connected and friction welded together, ribs (28) permitting gripping being provided near the neck of the vessel to facilitate this. The vessels are made by thermoforming the component parts in two (or three) separate webs, cutting them from the webs and relatively telescoping and spin welding them together.
