Abstract
1361814 Sintered metal honeycomb seals CLEVITE CORP 17 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 58636/71 Heading C7D [Also in Division F1] A sintered metal honeycomb structure suitable for use as a high temperature low friction abradable seal for turbine engines comprises a sintered metal grid with selectively impacted regions 16, 18 forming an array of cavities which are filled with a sintered metal powder 26. The grid and filler may be Ni, Cr, Al, Fe, Mo, Co or W or alloys of these with each other. The composition of the filler metal may be different from that of the grid, the sintered densities being 20-60% and 35-95% theoretical respectively. In an example a 80Ni-20Cr alloy powder is blended with 2% carbon powder and 2% alcohol and coated on a metal backing strip 24 previously dusted with metal powder. After vacuum sintering the composite is press flattened and then pressed with a patterned punch to produce the array of cavities 16, 18 e.g. 0À080" deep. After filling the cavities with metal powder the assembly is vacuum resintered.
