Abstract

1487117 Rotary positive - displacement fluidmachines GENERAL MOTORS CORP 14 May 1975 [30 May 1974] 20301/75 Heading F1F [Also in Division B3] A method of forming a housing member 30 for an I.C. engine comprises depositing on a ferrous strip 12 a thin layer of powdered copper and nickel and/or iron, heating to fuse the copper to bond the other particles to each other and to strip 12 in a porous layer 14, forming the housing member 30 from strip 12 with layer 14 on the outside and die-casting aluminium 22 on the strip so that it penetrates the porous layer and is bonded by it to strip 12. After die-casting, the inner surface of strip 12 is ground and a layer of chromium applied, e.g. by electro-plating. The ferrous strip 12 is of a hardenable carbon steel. The powder is 55-85 parts copper, 45-15 parts nickel and/or iron. The copper powder is finer than the nickel or iron. The two ends of the strip 12 are butt-welded at 20. An example is given, giving grain size, percentages, steel material and temperatures, &c.
