Abstract

1361129 Treating tobacco R J REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO 8 Nov 1972 [8 Nov 1971] 51543/72 Heading A2C Leaf or cut tobacco is fed in a continuous stream by a conveyer 20 into the upper end of a vertical chamber 10, wherein it falls under gravity through a gaseous atmosphere in a treatment zone into which vapour is introduced, and is continuously removed from the lower end 18. The chamber 10 is of oval cross-section and houses two spaced vertical standpipes (34), 36 each provided with orifices (38) so angled as to direct vapour in the upper part of the treatment zone downwards and vice versa. The treated tobacco is forwarded by a vibratory conveyer 22 which is provided with a hood 26 and an exhaust fan 28 to remove excess moisture. The vapour may be steam or an organic solvent, and may contain a tobacco flavouring agent or other addtiive dissolved or suspended therein. Delamination of cut tobacco, which occurs during the treatment, may be enhanced by the use of a modified apparatus, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), in which chains (58) are vertically reciprocated within the chamber 10.
