Abstract

1361104 Sanitary closets H M SUNDBERG 23 Aug 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 39223/72 Heading E1C A compost toilet comprises a casing 1 providing a compartment 5 for collecting excrement from a toilet bowl 2 fitted within an opening in a top wall of the casing, the compartment 5 containing a support 10 of openwork construction on which rests a mat 13, which is preferably of cellulose and possesses a cross-section of the type used for baby's throwaway diapers, a blower 30 for positively circulating air within the compartment 5, and guides 6, 7 whereby the circulating air is directed to a space 18 below the mat and then upwardly against and at least partially through the mat, as indicated by the arrows, so that a bacteria nutritive substratum is built up and maintained in the mat and in excrement subsequently received by the mat. The blower 30 comprises an impeller 14 driven continuously by an electric motor 15 which provides sufficient heat to assist the bacteriological action. A second electric motor 21 is operated intermittently by a switching arrangement associated with the toilet seat 3, so that when the seat is lowered after use motor 21 is energised and rotates an agitator 20 through just under one revolution in opposite directions, an arm 22 carried by the agitator shaft 19 being arranged at the same time to engage trip means 23 for tipping a bowl 24 containing the excrement into the compartment 5. Composted excrement falls through the mat into receptacles 11 which may be withdrawn periodically through opening 12. A ventilating opening 8 may be connected to a suitable flue. Fig. 5 shows the support 10 to be composed of angle members 10a arranged to form a grid.
