If it is required to alter the setting of the section 60, an air piston in a cylinder 34 is actuated to grip the stream of sheets between clamps 28, 33. When the resulting gap reaches the light path between a light source and detector 185 and a mirror 186, an air piston in a cylinder 105 is actuated to raise the fingers 119 to position 119<SP>1</SP> and lower the plates 77 to the chain line position in order to direct the sheets on to their lower path, or to perform the reverse actions to direct them on to the upper path, the detector at the same time actuating the cylinder 34 to release the clamps. Belts 132, 145 act as upper guides for the stream in the upper and lower paths respectively, while the clamps are associated with guides 50 to direct the stream between them.
