Abstract

1360083 Process for inter-connecting polymer molecules CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 7 Oct 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 46727/71 Heading C3P A process for interconnecting molecules of a polymer containing recurring tertiary amine groups comprises treating such a polymer with a compound comprising an element of Group 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 of the Periodic Table and two or more halogen atoms. In a preferred embodiment the polymer is simultaneously irradiated with ultraviolet or visible light. The treatment increases the molecular weight of the polymer or yields a cross-linked polymer; also, molecules of different tertiary amine group-containing polymers can be interconnected to form "block" copolymers. Examples of suitable polymers are poly-(pdimethylaminostyrene), 2-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate/methyl methactylate copolymer, poly- (2-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate), poly-(2- dimethylamino ethyl acrylate) and styrene/pdimethylamino styrene copolymer. The halogencontaining compound may be an inorganic compound, or a monomeric or polymeric organic compound. Examples of these are chloroform, bromoform, iodoform, chlorinated and/or brominated aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons, chloral, trichloroethanol, tetrafluoropropanol, chlorides of Al, Ti, Si, Sn, S, Co and Rh, POCl 3 , SOCl 2 , styrene/2,3-dichloropropene copolymer, poly-(2,2,2-trichloroethyl acrylate), styrene/vinylidene chloride copolymer, styrene/ trichloroethylene copolymer, styrene/2,2,2-trichloroethyl acrylate copolymer and brominated polychloroprene.
