Abstract

1359838 Cross-linking block copolymers IDEMITSU KOSAN CO Ltd 22 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 44148/71 Heading C3P Thermoplastic elastomers containing at least one thermoplastic block of a styrene, alphamethyl styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylate or methacrylate polymer and at least one elastomeric block of a butadiene, isoprene or phenylbutadiene polymer are crosslinked by heating the block polymer in solution in an aromatic hydrocarbon, in the presence of a cross-linking agent, and at 70 to 130‹ C. to 2 to 24 hours. In examples, the two-stage sequential polymerization in the presence of metallic sodium dispersion and as solvent, trimethylamine or a tetrahydrofuran/benzene mixture, of styrene / butadiene, butadiene / styrene, butadiene / acrylonitrile or butadiene / methyl methacrylate is described, followed by heating the copolymers in benzene and in the presence of benzoyl peroxide or azobisisobutyronitrile, and recovering the cross-linked products.
