1358838 English/metric conversion devices CINCINNATI MILACRON Inc 22 July 1971 [21 July 1970] 35207/70 Heading B3B A scale conversion device comprises indicating means 16, 21 for indicating relative displacement between movable machine tool parts and transmission means 28 for operatively connecting the indicating means with a spindle 10 which rotates with the relative movement between the members, the indicating means including a dial 16 and indicator 21, the dial carrying scales in English and metric units respectively and the indicator being axially movable between two positions defined by the ball and detent 26 to co-operate with the two scales of units selectively. The driving connection between the spindle 10 and the dial 16 is provided by the transmission 28 including a gear unit 29 having an outer internally toothed gear rotatably supported in the portion 22 of the indicating means 21 but restrained axially with respect thereto and two inner externally toothed gear units 30, 31. The gear unit 30 is drivingly connected to the dial 16 by clutch 32 which is disengageable to permit zeroing of the dial. The outer gear unit 29 has two gear elements 37, 38 which are selectively engageable with the external gear units 30, 31 by axial displacement of the indicator 21, whereby in one axial position of the indicator 21 (as in Fig. 1) the spindle 10 and dial 16 rotate in unison with one of the scales exposed, and in another axial position of the indicator (as in Fig. 3) rotation of the spindle 10 is effected through gearing 31, 38, 37, 39 which produces a different rate of rotation of the dial 16 with respect to the spindle 10 in accordance with the appropriate scale exposed on the dial. The operation of the device is effected by the handle 41 which is drivingly engageable with the spindle 10 by way of a clutch 44.
