Abstract

1372687 English/metric indicators K J RUDDLE C E RATHBONE and A M TRUSLOVE [trading as NEW ERA CONVERSION CO] 22 Oct 1971 [20 Aug 1970] 40049/70 Heading B3B An English/metric indicating unit for a machine tool comprises an externally toothed gear member 9 which is securable to a rotary member 1, such as a feed shaft of a machine tool, and is rotatable therewith about the shaft axis, an internally toothed annular member 8 in mesh with the gear member 9 and rotatable about an axis eccentric from the axis of rotation of the member 1, the numbers of teeth on the respective gears being in a predetermined ratio as to provide a conversion from English to metric units between the rotatable member 1 and the gear member 8, a graduated scale being provided on the outer periphery of the member 8 which co-operates with a datum mark on an indicator plate 18. To facilitate simultaneous readings in both systems of units a member 10 is secured to the externally toothed member 9 and along-side the annular gear member 8 and has a graduated scale 11 on its periphery in the alternative system of units. In an alternative embodiment the peripheral faces carrying the scales are chamfered to permit easier viewing when in use. An indicator plate 18 is movable to selectively display either one of the two scales. To zero the scales prior to commencing an operation the member 10 is axially displaced against a spring 16 to disengage serrations on the rim 13 of ring 12 attached to the gear member 9 from serrations on a bush 6 secured to the shaft 1. The member 10 is then rotated to effect zeroing of the scale and then released to permit the spring to return the components to their engaged position.
