Abstract

1358787 Treating exhaust gas REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 5 May 1972 [7 May 1971 6 July 1971] 21178/72 Heading F1B Device for the regulation of the temperature of a catalytic reactor for the depollution of the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, characterized by the cooling of the surfaces of the reactor by a flow of air, the flow-rate of which is substantially proportional to the reactor temperature, the flow-rate being interrupted when the reactor temperature falls below a predetermined level, means responsive to the reactor temperature regulating the coolingair-flow. The reactor 1 is mounted within a casing 8 which defines with the reactor an annular passage through which cooling air is forced by the engine-driven radiator fan 5. The reactor is rigidly connected to the casing at its downstream end 12 and slides in a bearing 13 at its upstream end. As the reactor temperature changes, the corresponding changes in its length are transmitted by a linkage 10 to a valve 9, the position of which determines the amount of air directed through the annular passage, the remainder of the air exhausting to atmosphere through the aperture 11. In a modification the entrance to the annular passage consists of an opening which faces forwardly in the direction of vehicle travel, so that air is forced in solely by the movement of the vehicle, the amount of air which enters being controlled by a flap, moved by an electric motor controlled by a temperature sensitive element embedded in the reactor. In this embodiment the reactor is tube-shaped and cooling air flows over the outside and through the bore of the tube.
