Abstract
1451514 Radiators for cooling vehicle engines FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 2 Sept 1974 [24 Sept 1973] 38244/74 Heading F4S In a motor vehicle engine cooling system including a radiator 12 and a radiator cooling fan 14, wherein a shroud 11 connected at its upstream end to the radiator encloses the volume between the radiator and the fan, a further opening 21 closable by means such as a gate 19 is formed in the shroud said gate being biased by means such as a torsion spring 23 to a position in which it closes the opening 21. In use, at low vehicle speeds or when the engine is idling, the gate 19 remains closed. At higher speeds the ram effect acts against the spring 23 to open the gate and thereby increase the cooling effect of the radiator. There may be a pair of the openings 21, see Fig. 1.
