1358713 Electrostatic separation K E MERCKLE 24 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 44577/71 Heading B2J A wet electrostatic filter comprises a conical separation chamber 4 with inlet 8 and outlet 20 of smaller area than the adjacent crosssectional area of the chamber 4, means to provide a liquid film 23 on the side walls 5 of the chamber to act as a collecting electrode and an axial discharge electrode 16 having discharge fins 19 which are spaced different distances from the side walls 5. A plurality of chambers may be stacked on top of each other, or arranged side-by-side. As shown, the incoming gas is pre-sprayed with water or chemical solution in an inlet chamber 1. Water collected at the bottom of one chamber 4 may be distributed by stone or foam-filled channels 10 to provide the film 23 for the next lower chamber or separate feeds 13 may be provided for each chamber. The spacing of the fins 19 from the walls 5 may be progressively reduced in the direction of gas flow. The walls 5 may be formed of non-conducting (e.g. plastics) material. The gas flow may be controlled by a ventilator 3 or slides and an auxiliary filter gauze may be used.
