Abstract

1358587 Blowing lances; metallurgical burner AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 21 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 28904/71 Headings F4B and F4T A metallurgical burner has an elongate housing 12, 14 with internal fluid cooling passages 30, 62 and internal fuel and oxidizing fluid passages 64, 52, a nozzle 54 at one end of the housing containing a plurality of elongate and generally circular mixing cups 56 each extending inwardly from the outer surface of the nozzle and communicating with a substantially flat cup bottom surface 82 which is oriented perpendicular to the cup axis and contains a fuel inlet aperture 84 and an oxidizing-fluid inlet aperture 86, whereby the cups cause intimate fuel/oxidizer mixing to establish a flame front retained at or inwardly adjacent the exit mouths of the cups, each of the cups 56 having a length to diameter ratio of between 0À4 and 1À4, and means for cooling the nozzle with the cooling fluid used in the burner housing. The cooling fluid enters at 38 and passes through the centre of the burner along tube 30 to a central chamber 60 in the nozzle and thence through passages 58, intermediate cups 56, and along the inside of the outer wall of the housing to exit therefrom at coupling 70. The fuel inlet apertures and oxidizer inlet apertures at the bottom surfaces 82 of the cups may communicate with common annular fuel and oxidizer distributer passages 84, 86 in the nozzle 54, or the nozzle may be formed with one discrete oxidizer passage (90) for each cup 56 and two discrete fuel passages (92), (93) for each cup, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). A quick-disconnect coupling 16 attaches the housing part 12 carrying nozzle 54 to the rear housing part 14 to allow replacement of the nozzle.
