1358528 Replacing cores within a wound yarn package H A GIRARD 9 Feb 1973 [31 July 1972] 6552/73 Addition to 1327167 Heading D1F Apparatus for replacing the transfer core 26 of a wound yarn package 30 with a replacement core 28 of smaller diameter comprises an endless conveyor 12 supported by a frame, a core replacement station 42 associated with the conveyor, a plurality of spaced apart yarn package supports connected to the conveyor, indexing means connected for sequentially indexing each of the supports to the core replacement station, gripping means at the replacement station for gripping and cooperating in pulling the transfer core 26 from the yarn package at the station, and holding means 46 at the station 42 for locking the package 30 against axial movement whilst the transfer core is being pulled, whereby, in use, upon removal of the transfer core 26 from the package 30, the yarn at the inner portion of the package can contract about the replacement core 28. In operation, a replacement core 28, e.g. a dye spring is placed on a mandrel on the conveyor, and a package 30 is placed over the core 28 on the mandrel. The conveyor is indexed to bring the packages sequentially to the station 42. A cylinder 52 is activated to lower the plate 46 to hold the package 30 against axial displacement. The replacement core 28 is also held against axial movement. The cylinder 110 is then activated to lower plate 90 and associated chuck 68, skirt 78 and constriction ring 98. The chuck 68 enters the bore of the transfer core 26 and the skirt 78 surrounds the upper end of the core 26. Cylinders 106 are then activated to lower the constriction ring 98 to compress the skirt 78 and thereby grip the core 26. The cylinder 110 is again activated to lift the plate 90 and thereby the chuck 68, skirt 78, constriction ring 98 and gripped core 26. The ring 98 is then raised by cylinders 106 to release the core 26, which may be blown into a container by an air jet 116. To leave the core 26 entirely free for movement into the container, the cylinder 110 may be further activated to raise the plate 90. The sequence of operations is then repeated.
