809,834. Drawing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., and WHATMOUGH, E. C. Feb. 13, 1957 (Feb. 15, 1956], No. 4716/56. Class 83 (4). Power-operated gripping jaws 2, Fig. 2, on a drawbench carriage 1 have body portions which are substantially circular in cross-section. One or more pairs of jaws 2 are independently slidable in bores 3 in the carriage 1 and have a plurality of gripping faces 4, Fig. 3, cut at different distances from the centre line of the body portion so that the spacing may be changed by rotating the jaws 2 to suit different dimensions of " tag " ends to be drawn. Operation of the jaws is by a pneumatic cylinder 23, levers 19 and cams 12 which compress plungers 11 having push-rods 10 engaging against springs 8 in bores 9 in the jaws. The springs 8 permit independent movement of the pairs of jaws 2 where the tags are not uniform. Release of the jaws is obtained by springs 6 beneath shoulders 7 of the jaws and the shock of recoil on release of the work is reduced by a cushion of air in an annular space 11a. The hook 27 of the carriage is lowered into engagement with the chain 46 by a further pneumatic cylinder 34 through a lever 30. The supply of air to the cylinder 34 is initially restricted by a valve 44 which prevents the hook 27 from being lowered until the " tag " end of the work has been gripped. Air supply to the carriage is obtained from a lance (not shown) which is engaged by a receiver 39 on the carriage when moved to the starting position near the dies. In a modification, the jaws 51, Fig. 5, are actuated directly by pneumatic pressure and have cylinder bores 56 slidable over fixed rams 57, air being supplied to the cylinder heads 59 through passages 58 in the rams 57.
