Abstract

1358272 Esters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Dec 1971 [18 Feb 1971] 4924/71 Heading C2C Esters of carboxylic acids are prepared by transesterification of an aliphatic acid (6-11 C) ester with a polyol in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a phenol. Sodium or potassium salts of hydroxybenzene, a cresol or a xylenol are mentioned and an alkyl (1-6 C) ester, e.g. methyl or ethyl ester of an acid prepared by the reaction of an olefine with carbon monoxide and an alcohol may be used. Ethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol may be the polyol, and examples describe the preparation of mixed pentaerythritol and trimethylol propane nonanoates, trimethylol propane octanoate, mixed di-iso-octyl esters of adipic, succinic and glutaric acids, and pentaerythritol tetraheptanoate.
