Abstract
1358215 Trueing grinding wheels BENDIX CORP 15 Aug 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 38083/72 Heading B3D A method of forming a grinding wheel periphery with at least one relatively deep, narrow groove 24, Fig. 1, comprises directing on to the periphery of the wheel as many jets 22 of liquid under pressure as there are grooves to be formed while rotating the wheel over a sufficient interval of time to erode therein each groove to the required depth. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the grinding wheel is mounted for rotation on a shaft 12 and a high pressure source 16 of liquid is connected by a pipe 20 to a nozzle 18 which produces the jet 22 for eroding the material of the grinding wheel to form the groove 24 as the wheel is rotated. The liquid may be coolant oil, water soluble oil or water with a rust inhibitor, the pressure 300-700 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, and the nozzle orifice 0À2 to 0À3 mm. diameter. In another embodiment, the pipe 30, Fig. 2, leads to a manifold 28 having a plurality of orifices 32. A hardened steel plate having precisely sized orifices 36 intercepts portions of the jets over the desired size. A crush roller may be used to form wide, shallow or sloping shapes which combine with the grooves formed by the jets.
