Abstract
1358200 Pendulum rolling mills IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 16 Nov 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 42539/71 Heading B3M A pendulum rolling mill, of the kind having roll-carrying, oscillatable arms 1 and 2 driven by separate electric motors 14, is provided with a shaft 17 connecting the motors together. The shaft has a central coupling 18 for allowing relative angular adjustment between its halves 17a and 17b, and is coupled by bevel gearing to crank-shafts 13 which oscillate the arms 1 and 2. The voltage applied to the upper motor is greater than that applied to the lower one, so that the motors supply a difference in driving torque which holds the shaft in a state of torsion and thereby eliminates backlash in the driving arrangement. The voltage is infinitely variable and may be manually varied or controlled automatically by sensors which monitor the relative positions of the arms 1 and 2.
