Abstract

1357936 Applying patches to webs F L SMITHE MACHINE CO Inc 14 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970] 47775/71 Headings B8F F1C and F11X A device for cutting patches P from a web 16 of window material and applying them to an envelope web (12) comprises a cutter roll 24 having vacuum openings 24a in its surface around which the web 16 passes and whose surface speed is greater than the speed of the web 16; a stationary cutter 27 which co-operates with a cutter 26 on roll 24 to produce patches P; a first transfer roll 28 rotating at the same surface speed as roll 24; a second transfer roll 29 whose surface speed is greater than that of roll 28; a release segment 32 which rotates at the same speed as roll 28 and releases patches P from roll 28 at a predetermined time; and an application cylinder 34 around which passes the pregummed envelope web (12) to which the patches are applied. The patches P are held on the transfer rolls 28, 29 by virtue of vacuum openings 28a, 29a controlled by manifolds 30, 33. The release segment 32 is covered with rubber or urethane C. In modifications, (1) the roll 28 is omitted, the release segment 32 co-operating with the cutter roll 24; (2) the release segment 32 is smaller to handle smaller patches and is situated closer to the meeting point of rolls 28 and 29 and may be received in an annular recess in roll 29; (3) patches are applied to the envelope web from two cutting and transfer devices, the roll 29 of the first device being spaced from the cylinder 34 and having a pressure manifold (54) to blow the patches on to the web (12).
