Abstract
1357880 Welding by fusion FOSTER WHEELER JOHN BROWN BOILERS Ltd 14 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 50565/70 Heading B3R An internal bore arc welding torch comprises a torch body 12 within which an inner core 26 is rotatably journalled by means which includes a set of roller bearings 31, a stem 14 extending from the body and carrying a non-consumable electrode 16, the stem 14 being attached to and rotatable with the inner core, a motor 42 for rotating the core and stem during the making of a weld and a stationary welding current input 58, the set of roller bearings being arranged to act as a commutator for the supply of welding current to the stem and thus to the electrode. The stem comprises a ceramic sleeve 20 surrounding a copper core member 18 and is arranged to rotate within a metal locating tube 74 which fits within a tube to be welded. The tube 74 is held in place by an adjustable datum block 76 which serves to locate the electrode 16 accurately in the weld region. Inert shielding gas is supplied by a tube 61 and flows down the ceramic sleeve 20 to the electrode 16, and the block 26 and core member 18 may be provided with fins to assist in cooling of the torch by this flow of gas. Drive from motor 42 to the stem is transmitted by a gear-box 40 and bevel gears 46, 48.
