Abstract

1357613 Detecting oil in compressed air JOHNSON SERVICE CO 8 June 1971 19474/71 Heading BIT [Also in Division G1] A device for detecting atomised oil contaminants in compressed air in a line 10 comprises a needle valve 14, a ball of cotton 30 containing a dye, and a filter column 20 of polyethylene powder in a tube 16. The oil particles pick up the dye from the cotton ball 30, coalence as they pass along the tube, and deposit on the powder in tube 16 the lineal extent of colouring of the tube 16 in a given time being an indication of the concentration of the oil contaminant. The rate of air flow through the tube 16 is set by compression of the ball of cotton 30 and/or the restrictor 24. The tube 16 may be curved. Calibration curves may be provided.
