[Also in Divisions Gl and G4] In the measurement of the concentration of a particular substance carried by, or contained in, air or other fluids, by passing the fluid through or over a filter medium to cause a change in a physical property of the filter medium or of a substance carried thereby, which change is proportional to the amount of the substance intercepted, the change is sensed photoelectrically (e.g. by monitoring the reflectivity or transmisivity of the filter medium) and every time a predetermined level of optical density is attained, either the filter medium is replaced by a fresh filter or a fresh portion of the same filter strip is introduced. In this way, the concentration of the substance in the fluid may be determined in terms of the number of times the predetermined level is attained (i.e. the number of fresh filters or filter strip portions used) for a predetermined quantity of fluid or a predetermined time. Typical applications are: detection of solid (carbon &c) particles in the atmosphere by deposition on (and resultant blackening of) a white filter; detection of concentration of constituent of a gas by reaction of constituent with chemical carried by filter; measurement of solid particles in air by colouring deposited particles with chemical contained in filter.
