Abstract

1357213 Weft tensioning; shuttleless looms SULZER BROS Ltd 28 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 30136/71 Heading D1E A gripper shuttle loom with weft selection using wefts of different physical characteristics has a weft brake that is released at the start of picking and applied after an interval of time corresponding to the type of weft picked. In Figure 2 a weft selection mechanism moves an arm 29 to close a reed switch 25a to 25f, corresponding to the weft selected for insertion. The reed switches are connected in a circuit having two adjustable cams 32, 33 and 34, 35 which close further switches 37, 39 when a edge 32a passes its switch and opens the switch when a second edge 33a passes its switch. The opening and closing of the switches operates the weft brake and there may be one adjustable cam controlling each weft brake or one cam may control a number of brakes each operating with similar weft. In Figure 7 one adjustable cam, in conjunction with the pattern operated reed switches 25a to 25f, operates in conjunction with an electronic control device 54 which controls the opening and closing of individual weft brakes. The weft brakes 7, Figure 4, comprises a fixed shoe 19 and a spring loaded solenoid operated shoe 18, actuated by the closing and opening of the selected reed switches. In Figure 9 each weft brake comprises the fixed shoe 19 and the movable shoe 17 connected to the piston 56 of a spring loaded dash pot 7a, each dash pot being operated by a linkage and a cam 74 that is movable to operate a selected linkage. The duration of thread braking is adjustable by means of a valve 59, 61 which controls the emission of air from the dash pot and each thread brake is adjusted in dependance of the characteristics of the thread.
