Abstract

1357116 Cutting sheet glass PILKINGTON BROS Ltd F M HAMER D LOWE and H W McKENZIE 7 March 1972 [23 March 1971] 7582/71 Heading C1M In the cutting of sheet glass, a point of weakness is formed in the glass, a stream of heated gas is directed through a nozzle outlet towards the point of weakness to initiate a fracture in the glass, a restraining member is symmetrically disposed about the nozzle outlet perpendicular to its axis to restrain the flow of heated gas away from the nozzle, the nozzle and glass having relative movement along a path and the temperature and flow rate of the gas being controlled to generate sufficient stress to extend the fracture along the path from the point of weak-, ness. The nozzle 16 and restraining member 20 may be separate as in Fig. 1 and the member 20 may have an inner recess or be flat. Alternatively as in Fig. 4, a tube 30 provides a flat disc base 31 as the restraining member, with a hole 32 as nozzle. The tube may be solid apart from the nozzle aperture which extends therethrough. The nozzle (16) may be guided over a suitable template by a member attached to the support 26. Vertical position of nozzle 16 is effected by a rack 23 and pinion 24.
