Abstract

1357095 Selective signalling UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Sept 1971 [11 Sept 1970] 43528/70 Heading G4H A counter, e.g. in a gas meter, has a plurality of drums bearing decimal numbers about their peripheries and rotatable about a common axis, so that the numbers are displayed, means associated with each drum for setting up a binarycoded representation of the number displayed, and means for reading the binary-coded representation without physically contacting it. The drums, as disclosed, are counter wheels bearing the digits 0-9, a typical counter wheel having 20 teeth on one side and 2 teeth on the other, meshing with pinions whereby each wheel (except the first) is driven mechanically from the preceding wheel with a 10 : 1 stepdown. Rigid with each wheel are four metal discs with tongues and gaps in their circumferences coded to give a binary-coded representation of the decimal number displayed by the wheel. The tongues and gaps are sensed by the changes they produce in the inductances of magnetic circuits. Output is serial by bit. The tongues and gaps may be sensed capacitatively, or may be replaced by magnets sensed by reed switches.
