Abstract

1356988 Pneumatic manipulative toys O T ELLSWORTH 5 July 1971 [13 July 1970] 31469/71 Heading A6S [Also in Division F2] A manipulative toy comprises a flexible elastic substantially airtight enclosure 11 having an opening 21; particulate material 25 substantially filling said enclosure; and a one-way valve 12 positioned in said opening which permits oral evacuation of air from the enclosure (Fig. 2, not shown) and normally prevents the readmission of air the valve including manually operable means to permit re-entry of air. In its initial state the particulate filler is free to flow within the enclosure, but on partial evacuation of the air the filler is constrained and the enclosure and filler adopt a mouldable consistency (Fig. 3, not shown), and on further evacuation the toy substantially hardens preserving any moulded shape. The toy may be returned to its initial state by manual opening of the valve. Filler materials. The enclosure is preferably filled with prefoamed polystyrene beads of a density of 2 to 4 pounds per cubic foot and a diameter of less than half a millimetre. Sawdust, vegetable seeds and grain may also be used. Valves. In the embodiment shown the valve comprises a cup 20 that is sealed to the enclosure surface and has a hole 23 through its base. A flexible rubber flap 26 is filued to the base of, the cup at one side of the hole 23 and has a finger 28 extending away from the unattached side, which when depressed flexes the flap to open the valve. A foamed polyurethane filter plug 24 is inserted in the hole 23. In another embodiment (Figs. 7 to 9, not shown) the valve comprises a semi-rigid body (30), inserted into a stem (36) of the enclosure (35), over which a flutter-valve (31) is stretched.
