Abstract

1356926 Graft polymerization process BP CHEMICALS Ltd 8 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 46602/70 Heading C3G A rubber reinforced polymer is produced by mixing the rubber in the form of an aqueous latex with monomeric material in the presence of a water soluble cellulose derivative, destroying the stability of the rubber latex, allowing the rubber particles protected by said derivative to pass into the monomeric material and polymerizing said material as a suspension in water stabilized by the addition of a suspension stabilizer. The latex may be stabilized by a carboxylic acid salt emulsifying agent, which is later destroyed by addition of a relatively strong acid, or by a salt of a heavy metal or aluminium. In the examples, the rubber, monomer, cellulose derivative, emulsifying agent and emulsifier destroying agent are as follows; (a) polybutadiene, styrene and/or methyl methacrylate, or styrene and acrylonitrile, hydroxyethyl cellulose, rosin and fatty acid salts and phosphoric acid or acetic acid, the suspending agent added later being hydroxyethyl cellulose, or polyvinyl alcohol and mineral oil being added in one instance before the phosphoric acid; (b) polychloroprene, styrene, hydroxyethyl cellulose, rosin acid salt, sodium salt of alkyl aryl polyether sulphonate and of methylene dinaphthalene sulphonic acid and acetic acid, polyvinyl alcohol being added later as suspending agent; and (c) butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, styrene, hydroxyethyl cellulose, salts of dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid and naphthalene formaldehyde sulphonate and acetic acid, polyvinyl alcohol being used as suspending agent.
