Abstract

1301068 Polymer/solvent compositions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970 25 Nov 1970] 27175/71 Headings C3G and C3P Compositions comprising a mixture of waterinsoluble polymer and an organic liquid are prepared by (a) providing an aqueous dispersion of fine particles of said polymer containing an anionic or cationic emulsifier, (b) providing a solution of a transfer agent in an organic liquid immiscible with water the transfer agent being able to undergo an ion-exchange reaction with the said emulsifier, (c) mixing the dispersion of polymer with the solution of a transfer agent which undergoes an ion-exchange reaction with the emulsifier to form a product which is 90-100% dissolved in the organic medium and 0-10% in the aqueous media, there being equal parts of organic liquid and water, and (d) removing substantially all the water from the compositions. In examples, the polymers are chloroprene/2-ethylhexyl methacrylate graft copolymer, chloroprene/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer, styrene/butadiene (50/50 or 30/70) copolymers, polybutadiene and chloroprene/methyl methacrylate graft copolymer; the emulsifiers are triethanolamine dodecylbenzene sulphonate, laurylamine acetate, the sodium or potassium salts of disproportionated wood rosin, and potassium oleate; the transfer agents are methyl trioctylammonium chloride or dodecylbenzene sulphuric acid; and the solvents are hexane, heptane, isoheptane, hexane/cyclohexane, hexane/toluene and hexane/acetone/toluene. Step (d) may be aided by mixing with the composition a small amount of coagulant, aqueous calcium chloride or sodium acetate being used in certain examples.
