Abstract

1355821 Cesspools ENVIRONMENT ONE CORP 19 April 1971 [9 April 1970] 27201/71 Heading E1C [Also in Division B2] Apparatus for holding and thereafter comminuting and discharging sewage or similar material comprises a tank 1 having a top cover 7, an inlet 6 for admitting material to the tank, e.g. from a gravity or pressurised feed pipe, and a grinding and pumping unit supported by and depending from the cover entirely within the tank, the unit comprising a housing 15 forming a sealed chamber 25, a motor 26 within the sealed chamber, a comminutor having a downwardly facing inlet opening, defined by a shroud 58, and comprising a comminuting disc 53 cooperating with an internally toothed ring 55, and a pump mounted above the comminutor to feed the comminuted material to discharge chamber 36 in a pump head 18 to which casing 30 of the pump is secured, the ring 55 of the comminutor being secured between the casing 30 and the inlet shroud 58. The pump consists of a helical rotor 35, secured to motor shaft 29, and a flexible boot 33 an inner portion 34 of which has a helical groove for cooperation with the helical rotor 35 to provide the pumping action. An extension of the shaft 29 carries the comminutor disc, which is provided with two impeller blades 54 either secured in grooves 63 in the undersurface of the disc, as shown, or. permanently attached e.g. by welding or integral formation. The stator ring 55 has a counterbored upper portion in which teeth are formed by cutting semi-circular slots 69. When assembled, the inner surface of the ring 55 below the teeth is arranged flush with the inner surface of the inlet shroud 58. The motor 26 is controlled by a switch 43 responsive to the level of sewage in the tank 1 by the provision of a pipe 45 and tube 48 which communicate level changes as pressure changes to which the switch is sensitive. Housing 15 is clamped in place, the weight and torque reaction of the motor being taken by long bolts 23 which suspend the pump head from a cover plate 12.
