Abstract
1353764 Graphite fibre yarn KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 28 July 1971 [28 July 1970] 35388/71 Heading C1A Graphite fibre yarn is made by twisting together carbon fibres having a carbon content of more than 90% by weight, a tensile strength of at least 7 T/cm<SP>2</SP> and a substantially circular cross-section so that the twisted yarn and the average tensile strength of the filaments constituting the twisted yarn is in the range from 0À03 to 0À5 and heat-treating the twisted yarn at a temperature of at least 2,000 C. in an inert atmosphere while imparting a tensile stress of at least 0À5 T/cm<SP>2</SP>. Preferably the elongation at break of the filaments is about 0À9%. The carbon fibres may be made from (1) ethylene decomposition products, (2) tar from high temperature naphtha cracking, (3) reaction product of heavy anthracene oil and air, (4) petroleum pitch, (5) chloroform extract of coal pitch, (6) distilled bottom oil produced by partial hydrogenation of tar obtained from crude petroleum cracked in air containing NO 2 , (7) pyrolysis of polyvinyl chloride at 405 C. in an inactive gas and (8) product obtained by heavying 45 parts of phenanthrene and 55 parts by weight of chrysene in presence of 10% AlCl 3 catalyst. In the final product the fibres are mutually compressed from their initial circular shape to hexagonal or other polygonal shapes.
