Abstract
1352732 Shaping and fusing glass fibres MULLARD Ltd 9 Feb 1972 [3 May 1971] 12780/72 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] A glass block having channels with curved axes passing from one face of the block to an opposite face is produced from tubular glass fibres-which may either be hollow or provided with a solid core of metal or readily etched glass, which cores are narrowed at a later stage of the process-which are stacked and fused together. The fibres may first be curved in the desired manner, by the use of heat and a pair of corrugated rollers (Fig. 7), or a corrugated press (Fig. 8), to form a baule, which is subsequently cut at such planes as give the desired channel shapes therebetween (Figs. 9 to 11, not shown). Alternatively, a block with straight channels is first formed, which is then softened by heat and sheared, either with (Fig. 13, not shown), or-as shown-without, a temperature gradient from one face of the block to the other. To prevent slipping at the surface of the block during application of the shear force, disposable sheets of nickel-iron may be sealed to the apposed faces of the block, or the latter may be coated with an enamel. The block may be employed as the channel plate of an electron multiplier.
